Tan Zhongyi, born in Chongqing, China, is a highly accomplished chess grandmaster and a former Women’s World Chess Champion. She began her chess journey at a young age, excelling in youth tournaments, including winning the World Youth U10, U12, and U14 Girls Championships. Tan’s breakthrough came in 2017 when she clinched the Women’s World Chess Championship after defeating Anna Muzychuk in a tense rapid tiebreak.
Tan’s career has been marked by consistency, with multiple national titles and international accolades, including her 2022 Women’s World Rapid Championship victory. Known for her strategic depth and resilience, she has been a dominant force in Chinese chess, winning the national championship five times and contributing to China’s success in team events. In 2024, she won the Women’s Candidates Tournament, earning the right to challenge Ju Wenjun for the world title in 2025.
Beyond her competitive achievements, Tan is a law graduate from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and continues to inspire with her presence in both classical and rapid formats.
